And it might be the missing piece of your IBS puzzle
You finally get your appointment.
Months of waiting.
You sit down with the consultant. They ask about your symptoms. You have blood tests. Perhaps a colonoscopy. Maybe an endoscopy.
The results come back.
“Everything looks normal.”
You should feel relieved.
Instead, you’re frustrated.
Because your stomach still hurts.
You’re still bloated.
You’re still running to the toilet.
You’re still worried about getting caught short when you’re out and about.
You’re still avoiding certain foods.
You’re still planning your day around your digestive system.
And here’s the question I often ask people during our very first call:
“What did you eat yesterday?”
Surprisingly, many people tell me that nobody has ever asked.
Not their GP.
Not their consultant.
Not their specialist.
Not the person who spent 30 minutes looking inside their digestive system.
Now before anyone starts sharpening their pitchforks, diagnostic testing is important.
Blood tests save lives.
Colonoscopies save lives.
Endoscopies save lives.
They are valuable tools.
They help rule out serious disease and provide essential information about what is happening inside the digestive tract.
But they don’t always explain why you’re experiencing symptoms.
A camera can tell us whether there is inflammation, disease, bleeding, polyps or structural damage.
It cannot tell us:
- If dairy is triggering your symptoms
- Whether gluten leaves you bloated for three days
- If you’re drinking six coffees a day and barely any water
- If alcohol is irritating your digestive system every weekend
- Whether stress is affecting your gut function
- If your gut bacteria are out of balance
- Whether you’re reacting to foods that appear perfectly healthy on paper
Over the past 10 years, I have worked with people who have been diagnosed with IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease and unexplained digestive symptoms who were repeatedly told their tests were normal.
Yet they still felt awful.
Many were eating foods they genuinely believed were helping them.
- Porridge.
- Wholemeal bread.
- Protein bars.
- Fruit smoothies.
- Low-fat yoghurts.
- Breakfast cereals.
- Granola.
- Healthy snacks.
And whilst these foods may be perfectly suitable for one person, they may be contributing to symptoms in another.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is assuming that a food is right for you simply because it is considered healthy.
Healthy doesn’t automatically mean suitable.
A salad is healthy.
But if every time you eat it you bloat like a beach ball, that’s important information.
An apple is healthy.
But if it causes stomach pain and wind, your body is trying to tell you something.
This is where personalised nutrition becomes so valuable.
Because your digestive system doesn’t read health magazines.
It doesn’t care what is trending on social media.
It responds to what you eat, drink and do every single day.
- Food matters.
- Hydration matters.
- Sleep matters.
- Stress matters.
- Movement matters.
- Alcohol matters.
And when you start looking at these factors together, patterns often emerge surprisingly quickly.
Many of my clients begin by completing a detailed dietary analysis.
This allows me to look closely at exactly what they are eating and drinking throughout the day.
Very often we discover triggers that have been hiding in plain sight for years.
- Sometimes it’s dairy.
- Sometimes it’s gluten.
- Sometimes it’s sugar.
Sometimes it’s a combination of foods, stress and poor hydration creating the perfect storm.
The point is this:
If you’ve been told your tests are normal but you still don’t feel normal, perhaps it’s time to ask a different question.
Not:
“What’s wrong with me?”
But:
“What is my body reacting to?”
That question changes everything.
