Alcohol is everywhere…

Many of us enjoy a glass of wine at the weekend, a gin and tonic after a long day… totally normal.

But if you’ve got IBS, alcohol can turn on you quickly. What starts as “just one” can easily end in bloating, cramps, and a very uncomfortable night (or morning) afterwards.

And it’s not just your gut taking the hit…

Alcohol also disrupts your hormones, increases inflammation, and leaves your body working overtime to recover. So if your symptoms feel worse after drinking, there’s a reason for it.

Why alcohol can worsen IBS

It irritates the gut lining
Alcohol is harsh on your digestive system. It can inflame the gut lining, making symptoms like bloating, pain, and urgency much worse.

It increases inflammation
When your body is already struggling, adding alcohol into the mix can push inflammation higher, which slows down healing and keeps symptoms hanging around.

It creates oxidative stress
Alcohol ramps up free radical production, meaning your body has to work harder to repair and rebalance itself.

It disrupts hormones and sleep
Poor sleep, low mood, and hormonal imbalance all feed back into gut health. It’s never just one system with IBS.

Are some alcohols better than others?

Yes, and this is where it gets interesting. Some drinks tend to be a bit gentler on the gut (in moderation):

  • Gin and tonic (with regular tonic, not sugar-free)
  • Vodka and soda with fresh lime
  • Dry or organic wines

What I see time and time again with clients is this…

Swap beer or sugary cocktails for something cleaner, and symptoms improve massively. Beer, creamy liqueurs, and anything loaded with sugar tend to trigger bloating, cramps, and urgent toilet trips very quickly.

A quick but important tip:

  • Avoid sugar-free or “diet” mixers.
  • Artificial sweeteners are a common trigger for IBS symptoms and can undo all your good work very quickly.

Your gut is unique!

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to IBS. What works for one person might completely trigger another. That’s why guessing, cutting foods randomly, or following generic plans often leaves people stuck. You need to understand your body, your triggers, and your patterns.
