Candida Albicans: When Good Bacteria Go Bad
Ever wonder why you crave sugary foods even when you know they don’t do you any favours?
It’s not always just willpower. Sometimes… your gut is calling the shots.
Let’s talk about Candida Albicans. A naturally occurring yeast that, when out of balance, can start causing real problems in the body.
What is Candida?
Candida Albicans is a sugar-fermenting yeast that lives in your digestive tract.
In small amounts, it’s completely normal. It plays a role in a balanced gut ecosystem, alongside bacteria and other microbes. Fungi are everywhere… in the air, on surfaces, and in food.
The problem starts when Candida overgrows.
When that happens, it can become more aggressive, disrupt balance in the gut, and contribute to inflammation and ongoing health issues.
What causes Candida overgrowth?
There are several common triggers:
- poor digestion and gut imbalance
- chronic stress
- high sugar intake (including processed foods and excess fruit)
- yeasty foods such as bread, beer, cheese and vinegar
- antibiotic use, which wipes out beneficial bacteria
- a generally imbalanced diet
When the balance tips, Candida can start to dominate.
Common symptoms
Candida doesn’t tend to sit quietly. It can show up in a range of ways:
- bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or reflux
- sinus issues, sore throats or respiratory symptoms
- brain fog, low mood, anxiety or irritability
- skin problems such as acne, rashes or fungal infections
- hormonal symptoms including PMS or recurrent yeast infections
It can feel like everything is “a bit off”… without one clear answer.
The sneaky side of Candida
One of the lesser-known effects of Candida overgrowth is the production of toxic by-products. These can impact how you feel day to day.
For example, compounds like acetaldehyde can contribute to:
brain fog
fatigue
poor concentration
Some people even experience symptoms that feel similar to being hungover… without even drinking! This is sometimes referred to as “auto-brewery” effects within the body.
Why balance matters
Your gut is all about balance.
When beneficial bacteria are thriving, they help keep Candida in check. When your diet is high in sugar and processed foods, it feeds the yeast instead. And the more it’s fed… the more it grows.
This is why what you eat matters so much. There are no shortcuts here. The gut responds directly to what you consistently give it.
If sugar is a regular part of your diet, it’s worth understanding how that feeds into symptoms: Sugar and IBS
Taking back control
Bringing Candida back into balance isn’t about extreme restriction.
It’s about:
- reducing excess sugar
- cutting back on highly processed foods
- supporting your gut with real, nourishing food
- rebuilding balance over time
Simple changes done consistently make the biggest difference.
Final thought
If your gut feels off, your energy is low, and your cravings feel out of control… there’s usually a reason. Your body is responding to what’s going on internally.
And when you start to shift that balance, things can change.
More energy
clearer thinking
calmer digestion
